Boys and Girls Club of North Valley
Surveys
In the fall of 2009 an independent survey was conducted that asked questions of friends and supporters of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley. The goals was to find out what the public knew about the club and its mission, what it believed was the most critical contribution the club could make in its community and asked for suggestions. Out of 15 other Boys & Girls Clubs in the region that participated in the survey, the BGCNV had the highest response rate. Please see a summary of the results below.
DONOR SURVEY RESULTS - Boys & Girls Clubs of the North Valley
1. Do you personally know someone whose life has been changed because of the Boys & Girls Club? 58% YES
2. How was their life changed?
- My son thrived at the Boys & Girls Club, making lots of friends (both his own age and with the leaders) and received recognition for doing great things like getting his homework done, being a good sport and playing ping-pong well. He’s learned the importance of being social and taking responsibility too – great life lessons
- They had a relationship with a positive caring adult who helped them through school
- A classmate of my daughter was having trouble at school, and his family was having a tough time financially. He developed tremendous self-confidents and a devotion to community service through the club.
- Bad home life and poor role models (parents) were mitigated by B&G programs, environment and structure and personal relationships with staff. All the success stories seem to share this theme.
- Wonderful staff taught great lessons
- They had a secure and stable place and people to believe in them and to feel safe with
- They stayed out of trouble and got a vision of the future that was positive
- They were able to stay in a home where there was no abuse
- They are more focused
- Becoming more self assured and motivated in general
- The child had poor esteem, poor grades and was heading for trouble. He became involved and was an award winning member of the BGC and ended up attending college
- They sought further education
- Came out of juvenile hall
- Good friends during difficult times (mom passed away 18 months ago)
- My son attended during elementary school age years. He loved the cooking classes offered so much he wants to be a chef someday and continues to cook in his intermediate school years.
- Makes all the difference to have a safe place to go after school
3. Are there other kids who have similar challenges? Yes 61%
4. Are there children the club is unable to serve?
- Club has waiting list
- Teens in Upper Ridge (Paradise) because of transportation
- No under-served group, per se, just a lot of kids who could benefit
- The club is full
- Not able to get in because of space and club finances
- Paradise club doesn’t have any more room or funds for more
- Elementary and teens on far north end of town (Chico)
- Need more clubs in other parts of town
- No weekends or late evenings
- Far south county, Gridley
- Waiting lists
- No transportation, good parents deprived of services
5. What are top three community concerns the Club addresses?
· Safe Place To Go and Get Kids Off Street
· Character & Leadership Development
· Educational Help
Other comments
· Healthy Development of Youth
· Crime and delinquency
6. If the Club achieved its mission, how would the community be different?
- Kids will have a place to go that’s supervised yet open-ended with lots of choices about how to spend time and energy rather than hanging out on the streets and creating ways not to be bored.
- My club has met its mission
- Higher literacy rates and less crime
- Better people make for a better community. The BGC makes youth better citizens that, hopefully, grow up to be more productive adults
- Safer, healthier, happier community as a whole. We would all grow from that.
- When children are invested in a healthy future, we are all better as a community. In addition, the BGC prevents crime.
- Safe, creative, productive place for all children and teens to go to in our community. It would have a positive impact on the schools which lack afterschool programs.
- Less children on the streets or at home alone.
- Stronger youth, stronger adults therefore stronger community leaders.
- I think the high school drop out rate would decrease.
- The community has greatly benefitted by the BGCNV. The only thing lacking is that not every child has the chance to attend
- Kids would have a place to go, including evenings and weekends, that would feel safe and secure and be a nurturing place where they develop bonds with adults who are positive and who care
- It’s met its mission
- We would see less drugs and more children achieve success in schools
- Ongoing support programs that enhance a sense of belonging, individual competence and usefulness in our youth, while influencing positive self image and the value of contributions to the community can only improve the community
- More to do and less likelihood of undesirable activities
- Fewer youth on the street with no place to go.nothing to do
- This club is reaching out to kids and doing a good job with those who want the help
- I truly believe they are making a huge difference in the young children in this area. The children’s life will be positively changed
- Perhaps to work more with the at risk adolescence wannabe gangstas. Having lived here for over 20+ years I’ve seen an increase of adolescent thugs. It would be nice to see BGCNV be able to do more outreach to these misguided kids.
- Fewer impacts on the juvenile probation system. Less crime; better grades, fewer school problems and greater pride overall
- More successful young people both academically and socially
7. What is the Boys & Girls Club accomplishing or seeking to achieve that no other organization in town can or is?
- Develop healthy attitudes toward play and work and supporting kids in finding themselves.
- They are the only ones who welcomes all with open arms
- The cost to join. And its really the only after school program in our city
- The after-school program is a tremendous benefit for those of us struggling to provide child care. The facilities are first rate. In addition to homework help, kids have the opportunity to work at computers, develop cooking skills and participate in other personal growth programs
- There really is no other organization meeting the needs of at-risk youth in our community.
- Great facility and staff teaching life lessons
- Making life fun, safe, healthy and something to look forward to
- Excellence in programming with evidence-based activities
- Non-religious driven programs for kids helping them with self image, with their school work, getting a sense of community and just having a place to go where they re listened to and often fed.
- Reaching the teen population of the working poor
- Positive place for kids. Homework and social and leadership skills which are taught at the club are priceless
- Safe place for teens.
- Helping latchkey kids and dysfunctional families find healthy social and education skills
- The seek to identify and are successfully addressing the issues of sense of self for a wide range of less fortunate children and teens
- Being sort of an outside looking in, I personally see that this club in Chico has a large volume of kids attending. They also have the necessary staff to handle this volume. The staff appears very well suited for their positions and very well trained
- The club’s unique relationships with the community and the local university is their strongest asset. I’ve personally experienced assisting with BGCNV teens as a class project for a leadership class at CSUC. What opened my eyes was the talent and ideas of these young leaders. I think our society underestimates our youth and the BGCNV gives them a place to be and grow in collaboration with the community and CSUC
- It’s providing a safety net that is wholistic
- The best outreach around. A place to go and DAILY activities. It’s affordable where most programs are “pay to play”
On a scale of Very Poor (1) to Very Well (5), how do you think the club/organization is doing in response to the community’s needs?
5 = 58%
4 = 24%
3 = 10%
2 = 0
1 = 0
